The Class 37 is a diesel–electric locomotive, designed by English Electric and ordered by British Rail starting in 1960.

An alternative model name was the English Electric Type 3, and the class was ordered as part of the British Rail modernisation plan to replace Steam traction with standardized Diesel traction.
